PenPage Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2025
Our Commitment to Your Privacy
At PenPage, privacy isn't just a feature—it's our foundation. We believe your thoughts, notes, and ideas belong to you and you alone. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data with the utmost respect for your privacy.
1. Data Storage: Local-First by Design
What we store locally:
- Your notes and content: Stored directly in your browser using IndexedDB
- Your preferences: Editor settings, theme choices, and UI preferences
- Your folders and organization: How you structure your notes
What this means:
- Your data lives on YOUR device first
- We cannot read your notes (they never reach our servers by default)
- You can use PenPage completely offline
- You can clear all data by clearing browser storage
2. Optional Google Drive Sync
If you choose to enable Google Drive sync, here's what happens:
- Your explicit consent required: Sync is 100% optional and disabled by default
- Direct sync: Your notes sync directly from your browser to YOUR Google Drive
- No intermediary storage: We do not store your notes on our servers during sync
- Google's privacy policy applies: Data stored in your Google Drive is governed by Google's privacy policy
- Revocable access: You can revoke PenPage's access to Google Drive at any time via your Google Account settings
3. Data We Do NOT Collect
We want to be crystal clear about what we DON'T do:
- We do NOT read your note contents
- We do NOT track your writing habits or patterns
- We do NOT sell your data to third parties
- We do NOT use your content for AI training
- We do NOT store your notes on our servers (unless you use cloud sync)
- We do NOT require account creation or email addresses
- We do NOT use invasive analytics or tracking cookies
4. Anonymous Usage Analytics (Optional)
To improve PenPage, we may collect minimal, anonymous usage data:
- What we might collect: Page views, feature usage (e.g., "user clicked export"), error reports
- What we NEVER collect: Your note content, personal identifiers, or anything that can identify you
- How to opt-out: You can disable analytics in Settings or use browser privacy tools
5. Cookies and Local Storage
- Essential storage only: We use browser local storage (IndexedDB, localStorage) to save your notes and preferences
- No tracking cookies: We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising
- Third-party cookies: If you enable Google Drive sync, Google may set cookies according to their privacy policy
6. Data Security
Because your data is stored locally first, you have direct control over its security:
- Browser security: Your notes are protected by your browser's built-in security features
- HTTPS encryption: All connections to penpage.com use HTTPS encryption
- No server-side vulnerabilities: Since we don't store your notes on servers, they can't be leaked in a data breach
- Export encryption: When exporting, you control where files are saved and how they're secured
7. Data Retention and Deletion
- You control retention: Your notes stay in your browser until you delete them
- How to delete all data: Clear browser data, or use PenPage's "Delete All" feature
- Cloud sync deletion: If you used Google Drive sync, delete files from Google Drive directly
- No server-side data to delete: Since we don't store your notes, there's nothing to request deletion of
8. Third-Party Services
PenPage integrates with these third-party services:
- Google Drive (optional): For cloud sync. See Google Privacy Policy
- Google Fonts (optional): For typography. Fonts may be loaded from Google's CDN
We carefully select third-party services and only use those that respect user privacy.
9. Children's Privacy
PenPage does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because we don't collect personal data by default, children can use PenPage safely. If you're a parent and have concerns, please contact us.
10. International Users
PenPage is available worldwide. Because your data is stored locally in your browser, it doesn't cross borders unless you choose cloud sync. If you use Google Drive sync, your data may be stored in Google's data centers worldwide.
11. Your Rights
You have complete control over your data:
- Access: View all your notes directly in the app
- Export: Download your notes as Markdown or plain text anytime
- Delete: Remove individual notes or wipe all data
- Portability: Export in open formats (Markdown, .txt) to use anywhere
- Opt-out: Disable optional features like analytics or cloud sync
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally. When we do:
- We'll update the "Last Updated" date at the top
- We'll notify users of significant changes via in-app notification
- Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy
